Funeral Mass for Robert F. “Bob” Czapiewski will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday April 16, 2025 at St Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley with Father Gregory Parrott officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-7 P.M. on Tuesday April 15, 2025 at St Ignatius Catholic Church and will continue 1 hr prior to the service. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 3:30 P.M. on Tuesday at the church.

Bob Czapiewski, age 93, of Spring Valley, MN died Saturday April 12, 2025 at Spring Valley Living. He was born November 08, 1931 in Winona, MN to Daniel “Chip” and Dorothy (Pfielsticker) Czapiewski. He attended country school through the 8th grade and attended and graduated from Winona High School. After attending one year of college at Winona State he enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 30, 1951 serving 4 years being discharged on July 29, 1955. While in the Air Force Bob was a Ground Radio Operator serving in Japan. After his discharge he returned to Winona State where he received his teaching degree. Over the years Bob continued his education, receiving his Masters Degree from Bemidji State. On November 24, 1956 he was united in marriage to Janet Brom at St Marys Catholic Church in Winona, MN. In 1958 Bob accepted a teaching position in Spring Valley, MN and continued working there for 39 years retiring in 1997. Bob taught Business Education, Accounting, Typing and Elementary Computer and Keyboarding (which he truly enjoyed). He also served as the Spring Valley High School Yearbook Advisor from 1959 through 1972. For many years during the summers he also worked for Kappers Construction and Willard Jahn Construction.

Bob was a member of Spring Valley VFW Post 4114 and served as commander from 1979-1986. He was also a member of the Spring Valley American Legion, the National Education Association, served on the Spring Valley City Council and was a member of the Austin Ham Radio Club. His call letters were KOIHV. Bob also served as a weather and storm watcher for many years. He enjoyed gardening, Camping, Riding Bike and his HAM Radio.

He is survived by his wife Janet, children; Stephen (Trish) Czapiewski, Chris (Renae Lange) Czapiewski, Mike (Meg) Czapiewski, Debbie (Scott) Worden, Jeff (Susan) Czapiewski, Karen “Goldie” (Wade) Krahn, Kathy (Gary) Nagel, George Czapiewski and Susan (Tim) Hoke, grandchildren; Allison (Matt) Timm, Sara (Josh) Marshman, Zach Czapiewski, Zoe (Nate Mallo) Czapiewski, Jennifer (Troy) Lange, Nicole (Andy) Meyerhofer, Kaylie (Kris) Nguyen, Mitchell (Kayla) Czapiewski, Carter (Andrea Kiefer) Czapiewski, Makenna Czapiewski, Savannah (Adam) Desmarais, Tierney Czapiewski, Tanner Czapiewski, Grant (Sydney) Worden, Kent (Megan) Worden, Mark (Jennifer) Czapiewski, Emily Czapiewski, Camille (Jesse) Lunn, Samuel Miland, Levi Nagel, Karrington Czapiewski, Montgomery Czapiewski, Simon Czapiewski and Henry Hoke and Meredith Hoke, 27 great-grandchildren and a sister Maxine Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Dorothy, grandsons Owen and Keegan, brother-in-law Allen Johnson and nephew Matthew Johnson. Edward R. Ries, age 78, of Spring Valley, MN died Tuesday March 18, 2025 at Spring Valley Living. 

Visitation will be from 1-4 P.M. Saturday April 5, 2025 at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley.

Edward (Eddie) Ralph Ries was born May 23, 1946 to Ralph and Mary (Schwickerath) Ries in New Hampton IA. He grew up on the family farm near Elma Iowa where he learned the value of hard work. He graduated Immaculate Conception Academy in 1964, and went to work at Oliver Farm Equipment Company in Charles City Iowa. He married Jean Ede on April 20 1968 and they resided in Charles City before purchasing a farm north of Elma IA, where they raised their two children. Ed farmed and continued to work at Oliver which later became White Farm Equipment. Ed switched jobs and worked at SMIco manufacturing pallets in New Hampton until they closed. Ed then went to work at Zeimetz Motors in Spring Valley until he retired. Ed and Jean sold their homestead in 1992 and moved to Spring Valley MN, where they lived until after Jean’s death. Ed was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia and was moved into Spring Valley Memory Care. When his condition worsened, he was then transferred to Spring Valley Living Nursing Home, where he passed away peacefully on March 18th, under the watchful care of St. Croix Hospice.

Ed was always a busy person, if he wasn’t outside working in his yard, he could be found in his shed tinkering and building something with his unending scraps of wood. If you were to find Ed sitting down he would be watching westerns on his TV.

He is survived by his son Kevin (Shirley) Ries of DeWitt, MI, his daughter Kelli (Tony) Larimer of Spring Valley, MN. His grandchildren Ashley (Bryce) Schmidt of Rochester, MN, Taylor Zimmerman of Eden Prairie, MN, Danielle Ries of Farmington Hills, MI, Gabrielle Ries, Courtney Ries. Two Step- granddaughters Shelby Larimer of Dover, MN, Erin Larimer of Spring Valley, MN; two brothers, Mike Ries of Cresco, IA, Gary (Mary Jo) Ries of Elma, IA, and two sisters, Elaine (Chuck) Laures of Osage, IA, and Marilyn (Gary) Schaudenecker of Alta Vista, IA. His brother-in-law Donald (Joanne) Ede of Maynard, IA, and sister-in-law Linda (Ede) Hiemstra of Waterloo, IA and sister-in-law Cathy(John) Ries of Elma, IA

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents Ralph and Mary, his brother John Ries, infant sisters Janice and Mary Ann, his sister-in-law Janice(Mike) Ries, his niece Deb Ries, and nephew Dwan Wadell.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley, MN on Saturday April 5th from 1-4 pm, with Father Parrott officiating a small Prayer Service at 2pm. Interment will be at St. Ignatius Catholic Cemetery in Spring Valley at a later date. Hindt Funeral Home of Spring Valley is in charge of arrangements.

The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Ed in the last seven years of his illness. Memorials are requested to the family.

 Thomas Joe Warren was born June 19, 1955 in Preston, MN to Vincent and Marie Warren. He grew up in Spring Valley with his parents and younger brother Tim. After graduating High School in 1973. Tom went to Rochester VoTech for two years before starting his truck driving career with Warren Grain. Tom continued to drive trucks for over a million miles all over the United States and Canada, until retiring in 2024. Tom and Theresa met and married in 1976 and celebrated 49 years of marriage together. They welcomed three beautiful children. Travis, Tyler (Sarah) and Toni. Tom was blessed with three granddaughters Aspen, Paisley and Mali. He cherished the time he spent with them and cheering on the girls at their ball games. He loved having his one and only grandson Beck as a sidekick and teaching him the skills he loved. Tom loved keeping an immaculate lawn. He loved farming, taking care of bees, traveling and camping to go trail riding with the horses and friends. Tom (and Theresa) were dedicated to preparing and serving the Spring Valley Community Christmas dinner. He was a lifelong member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Tom was preceded in death by his father Vincent. Honorary casket bearers are his favorite grandchildren, Aspen and Paisley Kolling and Beck and Mali Warren. Memorial Mass for Tom will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday March 07, 2025 at St Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until time of service at the church on Friday. Following the service, there will be a time of fellowship at Five Wynds Event Center at 1047 N Broadway Ave, Spring Valley, MN 55975.

Funeral Mass for Shirley E. Davis will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday February 15, 2025 at St Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow, MN with Father Gregory Parrott officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:30 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday February 14 at the Church. Shirley E. Davis, age 95, of Grand Meadow, MN passed away Feb 8th at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center. Shirley Elaine Warn was born on Feb 25, 1929 in rural Grand Meadow to Galen and Thrasea Warn. She was baptized at the Bear Creek Lutheran Church in rural Grand Meadow and attended Grand Meadow High School graduating as Salutatorian of the class of 1947. She and Stan Davis knew each other most of their lives as neighborhood friends. They fell in love and were married on June 15, 1948 at St Finbarr Catholic Church in Grand Meadow, MN after Stan had returned from the Navy. They began their married life on a dairy farm in rural Grand Meadow where Stan worked with his father and his three brothers. They lived on the farm all their married life, and raised their 7 children there. Shirley was blessed with a long life filled with accomplishments, but she felt her greatest accomplishment was her family. She was an accomplished seamstress, from sewing to crocheting, and many kinds of crafts. She is survived by her children, Ann Hanson of Grand Meadow, LaVonne (Dave) Griffin of Park Rapids, MN, Warren (Sharon) of Baxter, MN, Jim (Lynee) of Grand Meadow, Tom (Chris) of Neponset, IL, Rick (Brenda) of Kasson, MN and Mark of Grand Meadow, 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother Glen (Betty) Warn of Grand Meadow. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stan, her in-laws and a son-in-law Herb Hanson. She is the last of her generation of the Davis family. She will be dearly missed by all her family and friends.

Funeral Mass for Leo E. Barnes will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 18, 2025 at St Finbarr’s Catholic Church in Grand Meadow. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until time of service. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 8:30 A.M. Saturday at the Church. Leo Ellis Barnes, age 89, of Grand Meadow peacefully entered heaven on Tuesday January 14, 2025 at Spring Valley Living. Leo was born August 5, 1935 in Kirksville, MO, the son of Leo and Velma (Putnam) Barnes. He graduated from McIntire, IA in 1953. Leo was united in marriage to the love of his life, Millie Koenigs on September 17, 1955 at St Mel’s Catholic Church in McIntire, IA. After moving to Grand Meadow, Leo was employed at IBM as a machinist for 29 years, he also served on the Grand Meadow City Council and the Grand Meadow School Board. Leo and Millie loved traveling with family and friends to destinations that included Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, California and all over the Midwest. The Barnes annual Labor Day camping trips was a favorite for him. Leo also enjoyed going to the Grand Meadow Library and getting his favorite Western to read. You could often find Leo in his shop making crafts, toys, games and cork boards for friends and family. Leo loved going to his kids and grandkids activities and he never missed watching a Twins or Vikings game. Leo is survived by his wife of 69 years, Millie of Grand Meadow, MN, his son Duane; daughters, Sonja (Lonnie) Helgeson, Terrie (Duane) Hemann, Janice (John) Schmelzle, Trudy (Dean) Swanson and Tracy (Cray) Benson; 15 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren, a brother Rex (Joyce) Barnes and many other relatives. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ray and Fay Barnes, and Joe and his wife Judy Barnes, and a sister Rea and husband John Fuller. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Leo’s honor to Lion’s Hope Non-Profit based in Duluth, MN. Lion’s Hope helps support children like Leo’s great-grandson, Leo Benson, that are in need of adaptive equipment, tools and resources not typically covered by insurance. Lion’s Hope was founded by Leo and Millie’s grandson Bryce Benson, along with his wife Jocyln.

Russell (Russ) Charles Betsinger, 79, of Spring Valley, passed away on Nov. 10th, 2024, at his home surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was born Nov. 3, 1945 in Elma, Iowa, the son of Lester and Bernice (Northness) Betsinger. Russ graduated from Waldorf Pemberton in 1964 and entered the Jesuit Seminary. Later changing paths, he was united in marriage in 1976 to Joanie Kramer of Pine Island. He started his career working as manager of the deli at Barlow’s grocery store, owned and operated a Supper Club, owned Russ’s Country Corner grocery store in Lime Springs, IA, and later managed the American Legion in St. Charles. He retired in 2008 due to his loss of sight. Russ was an active member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time with his family and absolutely adored his granddaughters. Russ made many meals for family, friends, community, and anyone. He loved playing cards, watching Law and Order, and every cooking show imaginable. Russ’s sense of humor made everyone laugh right to the end. Russ was proceeded in death by his parents; son in-law Casey Mackori (Jenny), brothers – Les, Ted, Jim, Bob, Virgil, and Jerry Betsinger; sisters Mary Ann Greenwood, Betty Lou Finkelson, and Nancy Eckert; his brothers-in-law Steve Kramer, Ken Krause; sisters-in-law Sue Krause and Barb Cowden; and mother- and father-in-law Del and Deloris Kramer. He is survived by his wife Joanie; daughters Christy Betsinger and Jen (Stephen) Moore; four granddaughters Amani, Nia, Sammi, and Shy; two brothers Bill (Karyl) Betsinger and Rick (Pat) Betsinger; along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 14th from 4:00-7:00 pm with the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet to follow at 7:00 pm at Hindt Funeral Home. Mass will be held on Friday, Nov. 15th at 11:00 am, with visitation at 10:00 am at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley. Lunch will follow with burial at Pine Island Cemetery.
